Beyond the pain: Youth Diabetes Action Petition HK Government to provide ALL medical consumables to children with type 1 diabetes

Youth Diabetes Action recently published a White Paper in November which revealed that many children with diabetes would rather risk the threat of complications and ill health than undergo blood glucose testing four to six times a day. Why? They do not want to be a financial burden to their families.
 

• People with type 1 diabetes must do finger prick blood tests and insulin injections 4-6 times a day for their entire lives
• The cost of medical supplies can be as much as $1,200 per month and are a significant financial burden for many families
• Good disease management can reduce the risk of complications. Support from the government can reduce the need for hospitalization, ultimately reducing the future burden of increased medical expenses for the government

 
Attention: Chief Executive and Financial Secretary of Hong Kong SAR
I urge the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to protect the health and wellbeing of children living with diabetes and provide ALL medical consumables to children with type 1 diabetes under aged 25 in the 2016-17 Budget.

YDA: Blue November campaign

YDA 青少營 / Youth Camp 2016

一年一度的YDA青少營現已接受報名，今年將會到黃宜洲挑戰各項水上活動，營裏會有醫護人員一直監測會員的身體狀況，確保活動能在安全的情況下進行，請會員踴躍參與！詳情如下：

The registration of Youth Camp 2016 is now open. This year we will different water activities. Our medical team will monitor the process to ensure the safety of our members. Details are as follows:

日 期 ：2016年9月16日至17日 (2日1夜)
地 點：聯青社-青年會黃宜洲青年營
對 象：11至17歲青少年會員 (未曾參加過本會舉辦的青少年營者優先)
費 用：港幣$100 (包括營費及膳食, 如現正接受綜合社會保障援助(綜援)計劃或本會醫療用品資助計劃的會員費用全免)
語 言：英語及廣東話

Date: 16-17 September 2016 (2 days, 1 night)
Location: Y's Men's - YMCA Wong Yi Chau Youth Camp
Target: Age 11 to 17 Young Members (Members who hasn’t join the Youth Camp before will have priority)
Fee: HK$100 (camp fee and meals included, YDA members under CSSA or YDA Financial Assistance Programme will be free of charge.)
Medium of instruction: English and Cantonese

活動目的：
1. 通過不同的團體遊戲，訓練會員的解難能力、啟發合作精神及鼓勵溝通
2. 學習照顧自己及獨立地管理糖尿病
3. 讓青少年會員可以在成長路上建立他們的朋輩網絡

Activity objectives:
1. Through the team building activities, they can learn problem solving skills, communication skills and cooperative skills etc.
2. They can learn to be independent and handle daily diabetic management independently.
3. Members can meet new friends and build up their peer support network.

Hike for Youth Diabetes 童行有您 2015

As one of the supporting organisations, we would like to announce Youth Diabetes Action is organising the first “Hikes for Youth Diabetes”.  Please come and support our young children with diabetes. 

Objectives
‒       To motivate and empower young diabetes members through a series of progressive hiking training
‒       To encourage and engage family participation
‒       To raise continuous support from corporations by close acquaintance with young children with diabetes
‒       To increase public awareness of young diabetes
‒       To develop event organization skills of young members of Team YDA
‒       To raise funds to support activities of YDA and set up of the Centre of Excellence

Youth Diabetes Action - Youth Camp 2015

The Boys' Brigade, Hong Kong

A series of team building activities were designed and the medical volunteers from Paediatric Endocrine doctors, DM nurses and Dietitian have provided professional advice, guidance and on-site support for the camp.

It gave the youth a golden opportunity to increase their understanding in how to cope with their daily medical needs, and to improve their self care, problem solving skills and daily lives. Besides, they were flourished to develop their own social network with friends of similar backgrounds.

All of us had 2 great days!
